Educational Philosophy

Canyon Creek Music Education Philosophy

Canyon Creek Elementary is a firm believer in the power of music education. Studies show that music improves students’ brain power, motor skills, social aptitude, and so much more. In the Music Department at CCE, from kindergarten through fifth grade, we focus our attention on four main pillars:

1) Singing
2) Playing (instruments)
3) Moving
4) Listening

Aligning our curriculum with the National Standards for Music Education (established by the National Association for Music Education – NAfME), as well as the Washington State EALRs for the arts (Essential Academic Learning Requirements), we learn the basics of music-reading, music notation, and music vocabulary, and we develop musical skills as we get in touch with our “inner musician!” Learning is done through song, dance, aural exercises, barred instruments, auxiliary percussion, African drumming, recorders, guitars, and so much more!

“For through this gift to humankind,
We each to all belong;
It’s music that has joined us
In life’s sweet master song.

From the valleys and from hilltops,
From sea to shining sea,
Let earth resound with music,
And life the richer be."
– Betty Bertaux

Mr. Gray

Mr. Gray is entering his sixth year as one of three Canyon Creek Elementary music teachers. On top of sharing the role as music teacher to all of the fine students at Canyon Creek, Mr. Gray directs the 5th grade CC Marimba Ensemble, which begins auditions in January. Mr. Gray is an avid pianist in the classical, jazz, and popular music, and can be found performing in the Seattle area at various events and venues.

Mr. Gray's philosophy stems from the idea that learning music is not about regurgitation, nor is it about glorifying yourself as a teacher. It comes from presenting students with real music making experiences, moments that explore cultures in regards to music, and the way that we, as excelling musicians ourselves, approach music daily. Students get a chance to see how much we enjoy performing music, how we process and analyze it, and how we simply enjoy listening to it as well. Our inspiration comes from true excitement and the honest love for music, and students will reflect that same feeling without hesitation.

Chorus

Chorus is an extra-curricular choir, open to all 4th and 5h grade students at Canyon Creek! Our goal in chorus is to make beautiful music and share it with others, become better singers and to meet new friends.  Our Chorus page has more information on our current activities.

Marimba Ensemble

The Canyon Creek Marimba Band is an opportunity for Canyon Creek 5th grade students.  Students learn music inspired by authentic Zimbabwean-style marimba music, and perform several times during the Spring throughout the Northshore community. The application process begins in January and practices are after school February-June.
