Coyote Crier - June- 2021

Dear Canyon Creek Families,

Wow! What a year! Despite the challenges of starting the year remote and later transitioning to hybrid, I know that our Coyotes have grown physically, academically and socially. I am thankful for all of the learning and growth that has taken place. Thank you for hanging in with us through the year and making it work, despite the challenges.

In addition to planning so we can end the year strong, this is the time of year when we look forward to next year. We think about what has just passed and consider what we have learned in order to do more or do better next year. We have begun working on our Strategic Action Plan for next year, hiring is underway, and classes are being formed. Teachers are starting to work on curriculum maps and considering how they want to grow as professionals in the coming year.

The Canyon Creek staff has been working to make our mission statement a reality:

At Canyon Creek Elementary, we are a supportive, inclusive community that values and inspires social-emotional, intellectual, and physical growth at school and beyond. We provide the knowledge and skills necessary to contribute positively in our diverse, evolving society.

We are fortunate to partner with our fabulous PTA in our efforts. I would like to highlight a few projects that are contributing to making our school supportive and inclusive. One of these projects is the Column Art Project. Your family can help make our school a more welcoming, inclusive space for our students and families. The Canyon Creek PTA’s Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) committee is partnering with Canyon Creek Elementary to start a "Welcome" Column Art Project! Families are invited to create art including the word welcome in another language. Deadline for submissions is Friday, June 18th. Learn more about this project.

Our PTA has also organized the Windows & Mirrors Book Drive, which is providing books to our library and classrooms. Each month has focused on a different theme with intersectionality at the core. June is focused on finding and purchasing books that celebrate how LGBTQ+ Americans have strengthened our country, by using their talent and creativity to help create awareness and goodwill.

Why is this important? In short, representation matters. All of our students deserve to see people like themselves and their families in the books and resources they access at school. Whether we are aware of it or not, we serve students who are part of LGBTQ+ community, or who have family members who are part of the LGBTQ+ community. If we are really going to say that all students are included here, we need to show that we see all students. “When students don’t see themselves reflected in their class- room curriculum, it gives them the impression that they are not valued, that something must be wrong with them,” says Sandra Osorio, assistant professor in the School of Teaching and Learning at Illinois State University. It is Northshore’s commitment that all of our students are seen and heard. This commitment aligns with Goal 2 of the District’s Strategic Plan, which aims to shape responsible, resilient, empathetic learners who value diverse cultures and perspectives. As we wrap up the year and summer vacation approaches, I wish the best for the students, families, and teachers who won’t be back at Canyon Creek in the fall. I hope that you look back on your time at Canyon Creek fondly and that your next school experiences are great ones. For all those who will be returning next year, have a wonderful summer. I hope your days are filled with books, family, laughter and fun!

    • Device return for all students who have access to a personal device at home, or are checking out a device for summer, allowing them to participate in instruction for the remainder of the school year.

    • **Summer Device Exchange** You must fill out the summer device request before June 9th. Summer device(s) will only be given out if the summer Device Request Form has been completed before June 9th.

  • Tuesday, June 15 - 3:30pm-6:00pm
    • Cohort A Plan: 4th/5th graders will turn in devices on Tuesday during class. (Cohort B will have asynchronous work offline.)

      • Photo identification will be required for anyone picking up medication.
      • Contact the nurse if you anticipate problems picking up medication or if you have an urgent need for the medication stored at school.
      • Medications cannot be stored over the summer.
      • Leftover medications will be disposed of at 5:00pm on Monday, June 21st.

Drop-Off Protocols for Families:

  • Before you arrive at your drop-off date:
    • Prepare a sign with your child’s last/first name and teacher’s name. Display this sign so that it is clearly visible at the front of your vehicle (attached to windshield visor or propped up on the dash).
    • Sort your materials in this way:
      • First stop
        • Classroom book(s), book room book(s), textbooks (Science & 4th/5th EAP Math, scissors, rulers, protractors, math white boards, recorders (4th and 5th grade), sensory tools/sets and headphones - put items together in a plastic bag(s).
      • Second stop
        • Library books - put items together in a plastic bag(s).
      • Third stop
        • Technology - put items together in a plastic bag(s).
      • Fourth stop
        • Medication (if applicable)

           

    • You must be ready to hand materials to staff through your passenger-side window.
    • Face masks are to be worn for the safety of everyone.
       
  • Drop off directions:
    • Please be respectful of our Canyon Creek neighbors and do not line up early.
    • Cars will enter the line from the front main entrance off of 35th Ave.
    • Display your pre-made sign indicating the student’s last name in the front windshield.
    • Remain in a single file line along the curb. Continue pulling forward as you are able. There will be staff directing you.
    • Drop off will occur in the front of the school, along the curb. No parking is allowed.
    • Pull as far forward as possible along the curb.
    • Once you are stopped along the curb at the front of the school, a staff member will take materials you are dropping off (Staff will hold a box, and you will put your child’s bag of materials in. Library books will be collected also.) Then, staff will hand you your child’s pick up items.
    • Staff may not touch your car. You may not exit your vehicle to get things out of the trunk or the back seat.

Early Pick-Up and Late Arrival

If you are going to pick-up or have a late arrival, please send your student(s) teacher and CC: the attendance office (ccattendance@nsd.org) an email.

Information in the email:

  • Students full name
  • Teacher name
  • What date and time you will pick up or drop off your student

When you arrive on campus park your car. Call the main office at 425-408-5700 from your car.

  • Picking Up Early:  We will ask you to stand in the breeze way between the office and gym and wait for your student. We have directed our student(s) to meet their parents at that location. The office must see you and your child together.
  • Dropping Off Late: We will ask you to stand in the breeze way between the office and gym and wait with your student. The staff member will need to verify the Health Check Form has been completed as well as take your student(s) temperature. The staff member will then let you know when you are free to go.

Campus remains CLOSED to all parents and visitors.

 

 

 

  Yearbook Distribution 

 

Yearbooks will be given to the teacher of students who are attending class on campus.

2021-2022 Kindergarten and New Student Registration is Open Now

Do you have a child who will be 5 by the end of August? It's time to register for kindergarten! Enrolling your student now helps schools plan for incoming students and ensure we meet our staffing needs.

Northshore School District uses an online enrollment process. Please click here to go to the District enrollment page. Families who are new to the District and are enrolling students for the 2021-2022 school year can also utilize this process. If you have any questions, please email our Registrar: Terri Jaenson at tjaenson@nsd.org. Registrations should be submitted ASAP.

Summer Office Hours

The Canyon Creek office will remain closed through the end of June 2021. The office will reopen again Monday, August 9th hours are 8:00am-3:00pm. Check the school website for upcoming events and news for the fall school year.  Enjoy the summer!

 

 

News from the School Nurse

What to do now and planning for next school year.

Medications for 2021-2022 School Year:

New Medication Forms must be completed by the parent/guardian and health care provider for the 2021-22 school year. Medication authorization forms expire at the end of each school year and medication cannot be stored over the summer. Make sure you make your request to the health care provider before August. Clinics get very busy and may not be able to complete your request if submitted after mid- August.

Students with Life Threatening Conditions:

Per state law, medication/treatment forms signed by health care provider and parent/guardian, all supplies, and a health care plan must be in place before the first day of school attendance. You must contact the nurse to prepare or update the health care plan the week before school starts to prepare for your student’s safe attendance. A telephone or in-person appointment may be scheduled by contacting the nurse by email or phone. Let me know if you need an earlier meeting time.

Are you a Registered Nurse who might be interested in exploring the rewards of school based nursing, supplementing work hours or simply maintaining nursing licensure credentials? Our 'Welcome Back to School' festivities (New Family Tours, Classroom Open House and PTA Ice Cream Social) are currently on hold. An update will be sent out to parents when we have more information.

News from the Library Plan for May

We hope your students have enjoyed the book delivery program this year, and we are looking forward to welcoming our students back into the library (hopefully!) next school year! All student library books were due June 4thIf your child still has books at home, please return them to school as soon as possible. Hybrid students can bring them to the classrooms, and remote students can drop them off in a box outside the main office daily between 9:30am-2:30pm. If that time does not work for remote families, please contact Mrs. Beavo at kbeavo@nsd.org to make other arrangements. All books not returned by the end of the school year will result in a library fine for any lost books. Fees will follow 5th graders to middle school and students will not be able to get an ASB card or participate in school sports if there are any outstanding elementary school fines. You should have received an itemized list of books on your child's account through an automated email from the NSD Library System. If you did not receive this, please let us know.

Summer Meals

Our summer meal program begins Wednesday, July, 1, 2020 and will run through August 13, 2020.

We are excited to offer free meals this summer to help children stay nourished and be ready for learning in the fall. Free meals will be available for pick up once a week at 23 locations across the district.

  • Free meals for children ages 18 and younger
  • Each student will receive 14 (fourteen) meals at pick-up, 7 breakfasts and 7 lunches.
  • Orders must be placed between 8:00am-10:00pm on Sunday before the pick up day.
  • Families will need to pick-up at one of the locations listed below.
  • Bags will be heavy as they may include a gallon of milk. Please plan accordingly.
  • If you are unable to pick-up, you may designate a friend or neighbor to pick up your meals.

Northshore Schools Foundation

If you are experiencing financial limitations, the Northshore Schools Foundation would like to provide your Northshore student with school supplies for the 2021-2022 school year. The delivery of supplies will be through a distribution event held prior to the start of the school year. The Foundation will be accepting supply requests after Tuesday, June 15. Northshore Early Childhood

Northshore Early Childhood is currently enrolling for the Ready Start Tuition Program. It is a blended multi-age, inclusive model, serving students, ages 3-5. We are currently have openings at Sorenson for the 2021-2022 school year. Classrooms are taught and supported by a general education teacher, a special education teacher, and a para professional. Inclusive classrooms create a dynamic learning environment for all students. The average class size is 16 students, with class make-up of 8 students with IEP’s, 4 students who pay tuition, and 4 students who are income eligible. Classrooms utilize The Creative Curriculum & Teaching Strategies GOLD Assessment Tool. The staff is committed to fostering student learning and cultivating friendships while creating a sense of community for our students. Utilizing developmentally appropriate teaching strategies to support a whole child approach to learning, within an inclusive environment, fosters high levels of student learning and social and emotional growth for all students.

Northshore Planning 100% Virtual Option

The Northshore School District is planning a 100% virtual option for students K-12 who are not yet comfortable with in person instruction due to COVID-19 and/or thrived in the online learning environment. You can learn more by visiting www.nsd.org/nvp. In order to support our online planning efforts, you are encouraged to submit your Intent to Enroll form for this program as soon as possible. If you are planning to attend our full time in person model in the fall (traditional school model), you do not need to fill out a form.
